Our work preserves the authenticity and contemplative power of traditional Buddhist texts while making them accessible to contemporary readers. We bridge the linguistic and cultural gap between classical Asian literature and modern Western scholarship, ensuring that ancient wisdom remains relevant and available for current and future generations.
Through collaborative review and expert consultation, the Committee maintains the highest standards of accuracy, cultural sensitivity, and readability. Every translation project benefits from multiple perspectives—combining traditional Buddhist scholastic training, modern academic rigor, and native cultural understanding to produce translations that honor both the source tradition and the target audience.
WHO WE ARE
Composed of an interdisciplinary team of translators, scholars, academics, spiritual teachers, religious clergy and advanced specialists in a variety of fields, from both Asia and the Western world, the Trikāya Translation Committee advocates a holistic and culturally sensitive approach to the practice of translation, which aims to bridge Eastern and Western traditions. Our group includes experts and specialists from around the world, from a variety of cultural backgrounds and spiritual paths.
We welcome qualified new members to the committee from any background, nationality or religion.
OUR STORY
Building a Network of Expertise and Collaboration
The Trikāya Translation Committee was established in 2021 to formalize and expand the network of scholars, teachers, and linguistic specialists that Erick Tsiknopoulos had cultivated over more than a decade of professional translation work and traditional Buddhist training.
During his 11+ years living and studying in Tibetan Buddhist communities and monasteries in India and Nepal, Erick developed professional relationships with Tibetan Geshes, Khenpos, Sanskrit scholars, and fellow translators and scholars across Asia and the West. These connections proved invaluable, providing expert consultation on difficult terminology, verification of doctrinal interpretations, and cultural context that no single translator could possess alone.
The Committee formalizes these collaborative relationships into a structured network, creating a shared platform where translators and scholars can:

Rather than working in isolation—as many translators do—the Committee model leverages collective knowledge while maintaining high individual standards. Members serve as consultants, reviewers, and collaborators on projects that benefit from their specific expertise, whether that's Madhyamaka philosophy, Sanskrit grammar, Pāḷi textual criticism, or native Tibetan linguistic intuition.
Since 2021, the Committee has grown to include 22 expert members spanning four continents, representing multiple Buddhist traditions, Asian languages, and academic specializations. This network provides Trikāya Translation Services—and the broader field of Buddhist translation—with a collaborative infrastructure that honors both traditional scholarly consultation practices and modern professional standards.

The Committee functions as a collaborative resource network rather than a formal review board. Members provide specialized consultation based on their areas of expertise. This flexible, consultation-based model honors both the autonomy of individual translators and the value of collaborative expertise—mirroring traditional Buddhist scholarly practices where translators consult multiple teachers and specialists to verify their understanding.

When complex philosophical terms, doctrinal questions, or cultural context arise during translation, relevant committee members provide specialist input. A Geshe or Khenpo might verify Madhyamaka terminology; a Sanskrit scholar might clarify root etymology; a native Tibetan speaker might confirm colloquial usage.

Committee members help establish and verify consistent translation of technical Buddhist terms across projects, drawing on their deep knowledge of specific traditions and textual lineages.

The Trikāya Translation Committee is an international coalition of talents and skills dedicated to translating and interpreting the vast literature of Tibetan and other Asian languages, both classic and modern. Our team is culturally diverse, interreligious and multidisciplinary—bringing together ordained Buddhist monastics, academic scholars, native Tibetan and Asian speakers, and Western specialists in a collaborative network that spans multiple continents.
This diversity of perspectives ensures that translations benefit from both insider cultural knowledge and scholarly rigor, honoring the authentic voice of traditional Buddhist communities while meeting modern academic and practitioner needs.
