Then, Mañjuśrīkumārabhūta spoke the following words to the Bhagavān: “Bhagavān, the devoted enthusiasm for the Bhagavān by these Bodhisattva-Mahāsattvas is an act of difficulty, an act of extreme difficulty, indeed. Bhagavān, how should these Bodhisattva-Mahasatttvas, in later times, in later ages, fully explain this section of Dharma?” He spoke those words, and the Bhagavān gave instruction in the following words to Mañjuśrīkumārabhūta: “Mañjuśrī, abiding in four Dharmas is how the Bodhisatttva-Mahāsattvas must teach in its entirety this section of Dharma authentically, in later times, in later ages. What are those four? Mañjuśrī, for this, the Bodhisattva-Mahāsattvas must abide in rituals and modes of conduct, and in that way teach in its entirety this section of Dharma authentically.”
“Mañjuśrī, how is it that the Bodhisattva-Mahāsattvas abide in rituals and modes of conduct? Mañjuśrī, at all times, the Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva must be patient, restrained, hold fast to the ground of temperance, never be upset in mind, and be without envy. Mañjuśrī, at all times, the Bodhisattva-Mahāsattvas must not become engrossed in any phenomena whatsoever, and observe by looking genuinely at the self-defining characteristics of phenomenal categories. Thus, that which is complete non-engrossment and complete non-conceptuality toward any and all phenomena whatsoever, O Mañjuśrī, is what is known as ‘the ritual of the Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva’.”
